Bass Point is the small peninsula just south of Shellharbour and is named after the great Australian explorer George Bass. Nearby Shellharbour is a touristic place with superb coastal walks, lots of water sports, a picturesque harbour and scenic natural surroundings. There are plenty of accommodations, bars, restaurants and its nightlife is thriving as well. Lake Illawarra is a huge protected lake offering water activities from simple relaxed swimming to high-speed banana boating and jet skiing. Its remote hinterland shows steep peaks, dense subtropical rainforests and some of the best spots to hike and track in the Kiama region. The Kiama Blowhole is one of the most famous sites where oceanic water is forced through tiny holes with such a force never expected. Visit the Killalea State Recreation Area, Macquarie Pass National Park, Carrington Falls, Jamberoo Valley via Saddleback Mountain Lookout and the popular town Warilla with its excellent surfing.

Popular dive sites around Bass Point are the American merchant shipwreck named the Cities Services Boston, training dive site the Gutter and the brilliant muck diving site Gravel Loader. Bush Rangers Bay has been designated as a Marine Aquatic Reserve and many of the diving offshore is a critical habitat for the endangered grey nurse sharks. Also try to dive in calm weather, early in the morning before the afternoon wind picks up. Bass Point is considered as one of the best diving destinations this far south of Sydney.
