Flinders reef is an atol of 28km wide and 37km long. It is out of reach of daily dive boats from Townsville and Magnetic Island, so to get there you have to take a live-aboard. Visibility is excellent, marine and coral life is divers and fish inhabit the area in large numbers. The diving area near Townsville can be separated in three parts. The dive sites around Magnetic Island, being good, but with a visibility between 5 and 15 meters not the best in the area. The wall at China Wall drops down to more than 900 meters of depth. The wall is covered with soft corals, sponges and gorgonian fans up to 5 meters of length.
