Moore reef is one of the more popular areas on the Great Barrier Reef. At only 40 kilometers from Cairns, it is easily reached, resulting in lots of adventurous tours and boats that can bring you out there. Besides scuba diving, you can see it from a helicopter, by glass bottomed boat, from an underwater observatory or by other semi submersed vehicles. You can also join one of the helmet dive tours that allows you to see its coral and underwater marine life even without getting your hair wet. There is a large pontoon and most tourist shops in Cairns offer guided tours to this reef in some form.
The reef offers multiple dive sites, most similar in staghorn corals, large and smaller bommies and common marine species fully adjusted to the public. Wrasses, damselfish, parrotfish and clownfish are common. Stingrays can be found in the sand and reef sharks are found near its edges where currents catch compared with the many calm coral dives in shallower waters. It used to suffer from coral bleaching but recent reports indicate that the reef is recovering well. The coral is becoming healthier every day, even with this many tourists visiting this excellent dive and snorkel spot each year. The battle between nature and human has never been more visible as here on the unsurpassed beauty of Moore Reef.
