The small and beautiful Wheeler Reef lies on the western side of the Great Barrier Reef and is therefore easily accessed from Townsville and Magnetic Island. There is a public mooring buoy situated in 13 meters of water and with superb, less than 10meter deep, coral gardens not further away then 20 meters so perfect for snorkeling right off the boat. The diving is diverse with shallow coral dives and underwater canyons as well as gullies, deep coral bommies (coming up from 30m deep), small caves and swimmthroughs. This area is rich in reef fish such as wrasses but also sea whips and stagorn corals are common. It is a popular sometimes crowded reef, with ample of dive sites for beginners, novice and advanced divers. Whether you are just certified or a professional diver, there is always something spectacular while diving at Wheeler Reef.
