Port Douglas is one of the last towns where scuba rentals, dive shops and liveaboard operators are readily available. It is also as far north as most tourists go and one of the places where the Great Barrier Reef is at its closest. Well known reefs near Port Douglas are Agincourt Reef and Opal Reef, reached within an hour boat trip. Lizard Island is a haven of isolation about 10 square kilometers in size and world renowned for its scuba adventures including dive sites such as the Cod Hole near the Ribbon Reefs. Further offshore, a liveaboard can bring you at the coral atolls Bougainville Reef or Osprey Reef; both located more than 200km into the Coral Sea. The marine life here is unaccustomed to divers and attracted to the reefs as a magnet since it is the only shallow and nutrient rich area for tens of kilometers. The diving is astonishing; the inner coral reefs of the Great barrier Reef as well as the outer coral atolls.

The rich town Port Douglas is not only known by scuba divers. It is a well established retirement town with plenty of villa like bungalows and rental apartments. Shopping is excellent at Macrossan Street and the Marina Mirage while Four Mile Beach is known for its many palm trees, fringing coral reefs and superb snorkeling and swimming. Daintree, slightly to the north, is considered the Wet Tropics and last town where driving without 4WD is possible. You can explore the Daintree National Park with its flora and fauna; book a boat trip down the Daintree River and spot crocodiles, pythons and hundreds of other animals. Cape Kimberley and Cow Bay are extremely pretty offering excellent walks across coastal vegetation and white beaches. Cape Tribulation is one of those idyllic postcard villages were the rainforest literally ends right at the beach, where white sand and pristine reefs take over. Another popular trip is a 4WD tour towards Cooktown, using it as a tropical base for visits to the GBR and Lakefield National Park. The region around Port Douglas is one of the most pretty in Australia with access to dive sites and popular reefs that are known throughout the world.
