Although the waters just offshore Brisbane don't invite you for great scuba diving, there actually are several great areas to dive in Moreton Bay. The pristine waters around North and South Stradbroke Island are clear and offer some excellent scuba diving. Moreton Island is home to the two large artificial reefs Tangalooma Wrecks and Curtin Artificial Reef, the true coral reef named Flinders Reef and the many wrecks just away from Smith Rock.
There are plenty of other attractions near Brisbane besides scuba diving and snorkeling. Brisbane, capital of Queensland, is a vibrant hectic city with many parks, botanic gardens, theme parks and an active nightlife scene especially near South Bank. For excellent surfing you can visit Coolangatta, Surfers Paradise and Southport, located on the Gold Coast just south of Brisbane. The Sunshine Coast just north of Brisbane includes towns as Caloundra, Mooloolaba and Noosa Heads. The Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast offer pretty white beaches, salt water lakes and beautiful surroundings with a constant backdrop of sub-tropical rainforests. Other attractions are koala sanctuaries, 4 wheel drive trips to the sand islands Moreton Island and Frasier Island (from Hervey Bay) or you can visit the wineries at Southern Downs. The beauty around Brisbane is huge, from bustling city life to secluded villages, from chique dining to offshore island tours. The diversity and excellence of Brisbane accommodation adds up to this already relaxed atmosphere.
