Many of the most exotic dive sites in the Great Barrier Reef are within 40 kilometers of Cairns. That's why Cairns is world renowned as the starting point for scuba diving at the spectacular Great Barrier Reef (GBR). Whether you want to go on a live-aboard, take a day boat out or learn how to dive, Cairns is the place to be. The GBR is with more than 2000km long the longest coral reef system in the world and it is the only natural attraction seen from outer space. It is one of Mother Nature's treats and we have to do all in our power to keep it that way.

Cairns is a tropical laid-back city with superb beaches (Kewarra Beach and Ellis Beach), stylish seafood dining, a very nice salt water lake perfect for swimming and the relaxing Cairns Esplanade for a short stroll overviewing the waterfront. You can explore the in palm-fringed beach towns Mission Beach and Palm Cove or take a boat tour towards Green Island and Fitzroy Island. Inland you can find stunning rainforests, high waterfalls and azure blue lakes. You can visit the towns Kuranda, Mareeba and Atherton, which is considered the capital of the tablelands with its breathtaking Crater Lakes National Park. There are rafting trips, kayaking tours, skyrails, canopy walks and bungee jumps. Bars, restaurants, plenty of Cairns accommodation and a wicked nightlife scene add to this already great holiday destination offering activities and sights for each one of us.

The climate in Cairns tends to be better in winter, from August to December, with a lower humidity, but generally Cairns can be visited all year long. Water temperatures in the low 30s, tour operators for all sorts of Great Barrier Reef trips and extremely healthy and in fish covered dive sites make Cairns one of the best dive destinations in the world.
